Barrie Hudson is the owner and Chief Instructor of International Navigation School. He is a Master Mariner and Nautical Educator, with more than 30 years of teaching experience. He has taught hundreds of professional mariners qualifying as Masters and Mates, as well as non-professional mariners. He networks actively to keep up to date with the latest advances in nautical training.

  • Comprised of a series of units written in straightforward, practical language that you will have as a ready reference whenever the need arises.

  • Done totally within your timelines, at home or on deployment at sea — and can (if you wish) take up to six months to finish.
  • For Transport Canada, Marine Safety students, these courses are amplified to cover the syllabi for Chartwork and Pilotage Level 2 and Astro-Navigation Level 1 and Level 2 and the Sailings.
  • Issued on completion.

Unlike a course requiring personal attendance at specific times each week, you are not tied to a regular schedule. You control when, where, and how long you will study (up to six months to complete).

The school offers short refresher courses on request:

  • A special one-day Coastal course, covering: the chart, buoyage, time/speed/distance, compass, visual fixing methods, the sextant, tides and voyage planning.
  • A special one-day Celestial course, covering: position, Earth & the Celestial Sphere, time, the Celestial Triangle, and a short method to find intercept and position line.
  • Transport Canada, Marine Safety Certification subjects.
